Abstract

In this article, David Schaefer attempts to show that Montaigne was the intellectual ancestor of many characteristic aspects of modern thought. The liberty, prosperity, and comfort we enjoy as citizens of a liberal, commercial society derive to a large extent from the success with which Montaigne and his philosophical successors persuaded men to put their earthly well-being ahead of pretensions to divinity, salvation, or glory. Here the author explores the relationship between modern liberal political theory and Montaigne's skepticism as expounded in the "Apology for Raymond Sebond," which is part of the Essays.
