Abstract Azobenzenes tethered from the lower rim of crown conformer of O-octacarboxymethoxylated calix[4]resorcinarenes display efficient E-to-Z photoisomerizability in densely packed monolayers on a water surface, in LB films and in surface-adsorbed monolayers, respectively.
