Abstract

ABSTRACT The performance of a mobile C02-laser-based LIDAR is demonstrated. Keywords: Lidar, atmospheric monitoring, remote sensing. 1. INTRODUCTION LIDAR (= LIght Detection And Ranging)1, the optical analogon of RADAR, offers the advantage ofmonitoring the air quality across extended remote areas with a single sensor operated at a single location.Localization and concentration measurements of remote trace gases in the atmosphere are possible infairlyshort time; three-dimensional maps obtained by LIDAR display the concentration distributionas well as concentration build-ups and the gas propagation. Thus, LI]DAR is a well suited tool for environmental monitoring, industrial and military early warning applications and hazard control management. 2. LIDAR SENSOR SPECIFICATION The mobile LIDAR sensor developed by ANTEC detects and localizes remote gaseous traces of - halogenated hydrocarbons, - olefmes and aromatic hydrocarbons(e.g. alkenes, benzene, toluene, xylene), - ammonia in the atmosphere. The measurements range up to 2 km. The sensor's sensitivity for variouscompounds is
