Abstract

1. 1. The transepithelial resistance of Aplysia californica intestine increased in a sodium-free medium. 2. 2. The short-circuit current is carried by a net active chloride transfer from the mucosa to serosa in a sodium-free medium. 3. 3. Piretanide inhibited sodium-independent active chloride absorption whereas furosemide or SITS did not. 4. 4. Thiocyanate inhibited sodium-independent active chloride absorption whereas d-glucose or l-phenylalanine had no effect on chloride movement.
