Abstract

Introduction: About 50% of patients with hippocampus- (HC-)sclerosis have had a febrile seizure (FS) during childhood. Retrospective studies suggest that febrile seizure can cause HC-sclerosis. On the other hand, prospective epidemiological studies show no higher incidence for HC-sclerosis in children, who had febrile seizures. Thus, it is unclear, whether HC-sclerosis is cause or effect of the febrile seizures. Scott et al. showed that febrile seizures cause a temporary HC-edema, which can alter brain maturation.
