Abstract

This article means to show, through a few examples, how can anthropological pessimism coexist with laughter in the French moralists’ texts. Scarcely attempted, the analysis with freudian instruments of the mechanisms of laughter in the three great French moralists can reveal not only discursive strategies, but different polemic targets and a different attitude towards the ideal of honnetete.
