Abstract
Objective: To determine how many deaths in a paediatric intensive care unit (ICU) were preceded by failed cardiopulmonary resuscitation as compared to death preceded by withholding or withdrawal of life support.Design: Retrospective review of medical records.Setting: Paediatric ICU in a tertiary care general hospital.Interventions: None.Measurements and main results: Data recorded for patients dying in the paediatric ICU over a 5-year period included mode of death, diagnoses and length of stay. A total of 116 patients was included. Mode of death was failed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in 60 (51%) patients, do-not-resuscitate (DNR) status in 36 (31%) patients, brain death in 16 (15%) patients and withholding of ventilation in 4 (3%) patients. Admitting diagnoses include congenital heart disease in 30 (25%), malignancies in 13 (11%), motor vehicle accidents in 11 (9%), sepsis in 10 (8%) and others in 52 patients.
