Ponte - Apr 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 4 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.4.32 Abstract:The aim of this present study was to investigate the moderating role of coping styles among perception of tinnitus, stress, anxiety and depression in Pakistani tinnitus patients. The data consisted of 110 Tinnitus Patients. Purposive sampling technique was used based on cross-sectional design. Data was collected from various hospitals of Pakistan, through complete otorhinolaryngological (ear) examination. Three scales were employed to measure perception of tinnitus, stress, Anxiety, Depression, Coping styles of Pakistani tinnitus patients. The result revealed that perception of tinnitus was positively significant correlated with depression (r = .55, p<0.001), anxiety (r = .63, p<0.001) and stress (r = .55, p<0.001) in Pakistani tinnitus patients. The results further revealed that stress, anxiety and depression was positively significant correlated with active avoidance coping styles and Positive coping styles in tinnitus patients. The result also revealed that perception of tinnitus was positively significant predictor for depression (?= .463, p < .01) in tinnitus Patients. The results displayed that Positive coping was positively significant predictor for anxiety (?=.395, p < .01) in tinnitus patients. The results further revealed that interaction between Positive coping and perception of tinnitus was negatively significant predictor for Depression (?=-.19, p < .01) in Pakistani tinnitus patients. Our results revealed that Positive Coping is a significant moderator between tinnitus and Depression in tinnitus patients. Recommendation of this study is that tinnitus patients can get more benefit by addressing the coping styles and psychological problems. It would be helpful for clinical settings to resolve the psychological and health issues of tinnitus patients.
