Implementation of a marine reserve has a rapid but short‐lived effect on recreational angler use

Changes in human behavior are a precursor to measurable impacts of no-take marine reserves. We investigated changes in recreational fishing site selection in response to the 2005 announcement of enforcement in a marine reserve in the Gulf of California, Mexico. We used a novel data set of daily self-reported boating destinations from emergency rescue logbooks for a recreational angling community from 2000 to 2008. Because the reserve system has no experimental control, we modeled the data two ways to test for robustness to model specification. We tested for changes in human fishing behavior with regression and fit a fleet-level discrete choice model to project a. counterfactual scenario. The counterfactual is the statistically constructed ex post expectation of the human behavior we would have observed if the reserve never existed. We included month and year fixed effects in our models to account for seasonal and interannual fluctuations in fishing behavior and catch rates. We detected a decrease in reserve use compared to the counterfactual, indicating that the reserve rapidly experienced a decrease in visitation. However, the reserve's effect to reduce trips diminished with time. These results indicate that the reserve is unlikely to meet its ecological goals without institutional changes that enhance compliance. This illustrates the value of human use data to understanding the processes underlying marine reserve function. We suggest that managers should consider human use with the same frequency, rigor, and tools as they do fishery stocks. Marine reserves directly affect people, and understanding human behavioral responses to marine reserves is an important step in marine reserve management.

The 1995 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 1996) Science report concludes that evidence now available “points toward a discernible human influence on global climate” (p. 439). Reductions in emissions will require changes in human behavior. This study assessed whether gains in global environmental change knowledge would lead to changes in human behaviors that could be deemed environmentally responsible. The study assessed the impact on participant behavior of a two-and-one-half day National Informal Educators Workshop and Videoconference held November 14–16, 1994. The workshops were located in seven down-link sites around the continental U.S. and Hawaii. The program utilized a variety of pedagogical techniques during five hours of satellite programming with national expertise on global change topics (natural variability, greenhouse effect, ozone depletion, ecosystem response, and population and resource distribution) and applications of that information with local experts in regional workshops. Participants implemented many personal and professional behavior changes after participation in this program. Six behavior change scales were created from assessment of survey responses (four coefficient alphas were above .7, one was .68, and one was .58). Personal behavior changes grouped into three categories: Use of Fewer Resources (acts of everyday life generally under volitional control), Purchasing Choices/Options (less frequent acts, not under total volitional control, with significant environmental effect over the lifetime of the decision, e.g., an automobile) and Increased Awareness and Discussion (indicating changes in “habits of mind”). The professional behavior changes also grouped into three categories: Curriculum Development (developing/revising curricula including new knowledge); Networking (with colleagues from the program); and Office Procedures (reflecting environmentally responsible behavior). The statistically significant behavior changes implemented correspond with increases in content knowledge, confidence, a developing national network, regional applications, and satisfaction with the program.

Pandemic As a Crime Factor: Reason Mitigating or Aggravating Penal? (The Reflection Post Covid-19 in Indonesia)

Crime is part of the form of human behavior and will continue to develop following the dynamics of human life and civilization. There’s no exception that the Covid-19 pandemic that hit the world also had an impact on Indonesia. The impact is not only in the sphere of human health but also in the sphere of social life, including changes in human habits and behavior. Various Indonesian government policies to reduce the spread of Covid-19, such as restrictions on activities outside the home, to prisoner assimilation policies have also influenced changes in human behavior and the economic condition of the community which can be a potential change in the form and rate of crime. Crime will not be separated from the problem of criminal law and punishment, especially modern criminal law that is oriented to the perpetrator and the deed (daad-dader straafrecht) or also known as penal individualization. One of the characteristics of penal individualization is that the crime must be adapted to the characteristics and conditions of the perpetrator, which is elaborated with the view of the ecology school in criminology, a person’s evil deeds are influenced by the environment of the perpetrator (external factors). It becomes a question, is the pandemic condition a factor of crime, or is it a reason for aggravating or mitigating crime for criminals? To answer this question, the author uses a juridical/normative research approach, and it is found that the Covid-19 pandemic as a national disaster can become a mitigating circumstance and aggravating circumstances, in the form of Judicial Mitigating and Aggravating Circumstances.

Lifestyle is the interest, behavior, opinion, style of living or world outlook of an individual, group, or culture; a combination of tangible factors like demographics and intangible factors like personal values and preferences.1 Recently researchers have more interest in the relationship between life style and health. Millions of people, following unhealthy lifestyle (or risk-factors), are plagued with morbidity, disability and mortality due to non-communicable, communicable diseases & nutritional disorders. Persons having unhealthy behaviors may be called as ‘at risk groups’.2 Although a healthy lifestyle has consistently been shown to decrease mortality, the population prevalence of healthy living remains low.3 The mental health of an individual can be assessed by his behavior and attitude. Common lifestyle variables influencing health include diet, exercise, sleep, smoking, alcohol consumption, substance abuse, stress management, sexual behavior, internet, recreation, etc.4 Besides, weight management, exposure to the sun, social contact, work life balance, leisure activities, screening for cancer etc. make a healthy life style. Healthy ways of living are developed through processes of socialization with parents, friends, relatives and community. However, not all life style factors are harmful. There are many life styles that promote health. For example, adequate nutrition, exercise, meditation, enough sleep etc.5 Modern or slow epidemics of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) e.g. hypertension (HTN), coronary heart disease (CHD), diabetes mellitus (DM), obesity, cancer etc. have been increasing in incidence compared to the previous century. With the increase in life expectancy, the prevalence of NCDs is on the rise. About 2 billion people are overweight in developed as well as low to middle income countries.6 Comorbidities of obesity include HTN, CHD, DM, stroke, cancers, gallbladder disease, dyslipidaemia, osteoarthritis, gout and sleep apnoea.7 Obesity is not only preventable but treatable with lifestyle modifications to forestall DM.8 Furthermore, several pathways linking obesity and CHD have been described; in particular coronary atherosclerosis, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.9 In a study by CDC conducted in late 1970s in US, approximately 48% of all premature deaths prior to age 75 years could be traced to one’s lifestyle or health behavior choices, hence focusing on a personal responsibility model whereas another study accounts for about 63% of all deaths.10 Human behavior is a major obstacle to disease control. Changes in human behavior may prevent most of the world's major health problems & premature deaths at low cost. Public health is defined as ‘the health status of a defined group of people and the governmental actions and conditions at the local, state, and national levels to promote healthy behaviors, prevent spread of disease and injuries, protect against environmental hazards & disasters and assure the curative and rehabilitative health services. Many public health recommendations and clinical guidelines emphasize that healthy lifestyles have substantial health benefits.11 Changes in the life-style of the population by health education encompass three approaches of primary prevention as recommended by the WHO for prevention of chronic diseases. In first approach or primordial prevention, children are discouraged from adopting harmful lifestyles through individual/ mass education in countries in which many adult health problems (e.g., obesity, hypertension) have not yet appeared. Lifestyles are formed during childhood and aim is to prevent the emergence of risk factors. Second approach or population (mass) strategy is directed at the whole population, irrespective of individual risk level. A small reduction in the average blood pressure/ serum cholesterol in the community, helps in reducing the CHD prevalence. Third approach or high-risk strategy, on the other hand, aims to detect individuals at high risk by the optimum use of clinical methods and provide preventive care to them. To have an impact on the population, all the above three approaches should be implemented as they are usually complementary but the results are perceived after several decades and not immediately. Besides health education the population must have access to preventive measures.5 Lifestyle medicine program serves as a systematized approach to manage NCDS by addressing multiple risk factors through self-management skills.12 Physical activity leading to cardiorespiratory fitness is needed in all age groups, both sexes, race & ethnicities to prevent NCDs including CVDs.13 Better control of behavioral risk factors alone could prevent one-third of all acute and two-thirds of chronic disabilities. Effects of Human Behavior Changes During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic on Influenza Spread in Hong Kong.

BackgroundCOVID-19 continues to threaten human life worldwide. We explored how human behaviours have been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, and how the transmission of other respiratory diseases (e.g. influenza) has been influenced by human behaviour.MethodsWe focused on the spread of COVID-19 and influenza infections based on reported COVID-19 cases and influenza surveillance data, and investigated the changes in human behaviour due to COVID-19 based on mass transit railway data and the data from a telephone survey. We did the simulation based on SEIR model to assess the risk reduction of influenza transmission caused by the changes in human behaviour.ResultsDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of passengers fell by 52.0% compared with the same period in 2019. Residents spent 32.2% more time at home. Each person on average came into close contact with 17.6 and 7.1 people per day during the normal and pandemic periods, respectively. Students, workers, and older people reduced their daily number of close contacts by 83.0%, 48.1%, and 40.3%, respectively. The close contact rates in residences, workplaces, places of study, restaurants, shopping centres, markets, and public transport decreased by 8.3%, 30.8%, 66.0%, 38.5%, 48.6%, 41.0%, and 36.1%, respectively. Based on the simulation, these changes in human behaviours reduced the effective reproduction number of influenza by 63.1%.ConclusionsHuman behaviours were significantly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. Close contact control contributed more than 47% to the reduction in infection risk of COVID-19.

Characterizing Human–Automated Vehicle Interactions: An Investigation into Car-Following Behavior

Automated vehicles are expected to influence human drivers’ behavior. Accordingly, capturing such changes is critical for planning and operation purposes. With regard to car-following behavior, a key question is whether existing car-following models can replicate these changes in human behavior. Using a data set that was collected from the car-following behavior of human drivers when following automated vehicles, this paper offers a robust methodology based on the concept of dynamic time warping to investigate the critical parameters that can be used to capture changes in human behavior. The results indicate that spacing can best substantiate such changes. Moreover, calibration and validation of the intelligent driver model (IDM) suggest its inability to capture changes in human behavior in response to automated vehicles. Thus, an extension of the IDM that explicitly models stochasticity in the behavior of individual drivers is applied, and the results show such a model can identify a reduction in uncertainty when following an automated vehicle. This finding also has implications for a stochastic extension to other models when analyzing and simulating a mixed-autonomy traffic flow environment.

The impact of the digital environment on eco-friendly behavioural change towards nature: Exploring the concept of forest bathing without forest

The article quantitatively investigates transformative changes in human behavioral patterns about nature due to using digital forests in relaxation practices. In the era of COVID-19, when physical outings and social interactions have been limited, there has been a growing trend for people to engage in digital interactions with nature. This article aims to quantify the impact of people’s behavior and interaction in the digital space on the change of personal behavioral patterns in the physical natural environment, as well as to analyze the potential effects of digital “bathing in the forest”. Since in work it is advisable to take into account the influence of hidden factors, structural equation modeling was used for the needs of this study. The primary data were the answers of 300 respondents, which were obtained based on the results of a survey of people in the capital region of Japan. A five-point Likert scale was used to evaluate and analyze respondents’ opinions. The internal reliability of the questionnaire scales was tested using Cronbach’s alpha. The work offers an integral indicator for assessing the personal characteristics of individuals, based on which two groups of respondents were formed – extroverts (the index is higher than the median) and introverts (the index is lower than the median). The study analyzed the pathways that lead to changes in human behavior caused by the development of digital natural relaxation methods. The work established a statistically significant relationship between the effect of digital “bathing in the forest” and a change in human behavior (correlation coefficient 0.872). According to the results of structural modeling, it was found that digital “forest bathing” has a significant mediating effect on the promotion of pro-environmental behavior (correlation coefficient is 0.634) and that users who regularly experience nature in cyberspace are more likely to change their behavior concerning nature. It is substantiated that people closer to introversion are more actively involved in the digital space and interact with others, and significantly more often change their behavior towards the environment. This study is a rare contribution demonstrating the potential of enjoying digital “forest bathing” to induce environmentally oriented behavior, even in the physical absence of forests.

This thesis deals with persuasive design. The result of this research was motivated by the quest for understanding the different dimensions or categories of analysis that influence or even determines changes in human behavior through the use of product designs. A transdisciplinary vision was the departure research posture in order to understand the full human behavioral dimensions playing a role in human behavioral changes. This stance recognizes the human behavior as a result of internal forces that shapes the individuals intentionality and external forces that constrain and determines the final behavior. This thesis intent to answer the main question about, which are the conceptual dimensions involved in behavioral change through the use of a product design that persuades people into the new behavior? The hypothesis thus defines the existence of external forces to the product that influence and determines the result of an intended change in human behavior through the use of product design. These external forces are defined as conceptual dimensions that must be taken into account when designing products with the intent of provoking a human behavioral change. The use of the Grounded Theory approach allowed studying a singular phenomenon and generating categories of analysis through theoretical sampling.

Multidisciplinarity in Information Behavior: Expanding Boundaries or Fragmentation of the Field?

How does information lead to changes in human behavior ? Why have current information theories been inadequate to shed light on this and related questions ? Library and Information Science (LIS) has arrived at a crucial juncture in its relatively brief theoretical history. In addition to the cognitive and physical perspectives in our study of information, a new paradigm has been suggested; the affective paradigm. This new perspective offers keys to unlocking questions about the nature of the interaction of human and information. In recent years we have developed deeper knowledge and deeper specializations, drawing together and combining knowledge from multiple fields in order to advance our own knowledge. The relationship between information needs and information seeking has been well studied. The ways in which people use information is not as well understood because of the complex nature of human behavior. Drawing from other fields that study human behavior, however, muddies the traditional boundaries of LIS, creating some possible discomfort as we trespass into lesser known intellectual territory. Pushing our boundaries also forces questions of our self-identity as a discipline. What constitutes Library and Information Science, either in whole or in part, becomes more difficult to define and can lead to greater fragmentation. Alternatively, the incorporation of multiple perspectives may be the defining core of what constitutes LIS. The focus of this talk is to look at LIS from the outside in, from a multidisciplinary perspective, in order to shed light on questions of how information can lead to changes in human behavior. Drawing from other fields of study, the impact of information on human behavior will be explored in light of what other fields may have to offer.

Predicting activity occurrence time in smart homes with evolving fuzzy models

In this paper, we address the problem of predicting the time of occurrence of next activity, given the current activity and the context. The models that predict activity and time of occurrence rely on the basic idea that human beings perform sequence of activities at specific times regularly. In other words, the models are dependent on human behavior. However, human behavior changes over time. Also, due to demands and goals to be attained, there may be change in human behavior. Therefore, one of the essential requirements of the predictive models for the given task is autonomous adaptation with time and without undergoing any retraining. Considering the requirement of an adaptive model, we propose an evolving fuzzy rule-based predictive model that can autonomously adapt with changes in the human behavior. The performance of the model is evaluated using real-life data with evolving characteristics and satisfactory results are obtained.

Modeling environmental regulations in regional green economy efficiency of Halimun Salak: Empirical Evidence from National Park

This study aims to explain Environmental Regulation Modeling in the Halimun Salak Regional Green Economy Efficiency: Empirical Evidence from the National Park which is expected to be a sustainable solution in supporting the creation of a balance between the economic and environmental concepts, especially in the Halimun Salak national park area, Bogor, Indonesia. The research method used is a qualitative method with a grounded theory approach. The results show that the current environmental regulatory modeling has not been successful in implementing green economy efficiency in the salak forest area. This is evidenced by the findings that there are overlapping regulations, low economic income, the increasing population in the salak forest area, and the lack of resolution of legal protection cases. As well as the implementation of environmental policies to date is still in the form of command and control, which causes discrepancies between the parties that are interrelated. As a result, it is necessary to change the environmental policy model for forest areas, namely by using the rational choice theory model. This policy model will become a new solution in implementing increasingly dynamic policies following changes in human behavior and technological developments. Environmental policies that are made must be a role model in an open and dynamic implementation.

SIGS-S: A Web Application and a Mobile Application for Social and Health Care Data Management

In Brazil, information systems have been used to support government activities, such as public social and health care. For instance, SIGS is a web information system for management of social programs. Another example of information system is e-SUS for health care data management. Considering that crossing data from social and health care may be useful in decision-making for both areas, the SIGS-S project was proposed. It consists of a web appli- cation and a mobile application for social and health care data management. SIGS-S Web is a web application composed by two subsystems, SIGS-S Web So- cial, resulting of the reengineering of SIGS, and SIGS-S Web Saúde, inspired by data forms from e-SUS. SIGS-S Mobile Saúde is a mobile application to support health data collection. Processes ProFap and ProFap-R were used during their development. As a result, both web and mobile applications, as well as web services to support cross-application data exchange, were developed. Furthermore, it was prepared the documentation for both applications to help future software maintenance. Both applications were developed and validated with participation of stakeholders (health users and government managers).
