The placement of students is an important parameter for quality evaluation of higher educational institutions across the globe. Given the significance of placements in higher education, the study aimed to determine if Indian higher education institutions are taking steps towards assuring the quality of placements. The authors developed a process quality assurance model for placements based on standard conceptual frameworks by researchers. Its likely effectiveness was evaluated by surveying 395 final-year students of higher education institutions across India. Respondents overwhelmingly agreed to the effectiveness of the process model of quality assurance for higher educational institution placements. Regarding existing placement efforts, a large majority disagreed that any quality assurance was in place, leading to poor placements. If a ‘process model’ is used to assure quality, it can significantly improve the placements of higher education institutions not just in India but in any part of the world.

Purpose: development of recommendations for the study of security-oriented disciplines by students of higher educational institutions. Methodology: Analysis and generalisation of research results regarding the need of higher education students to study security-oriented disciplines. Results: In the conditions of modern warfare, knowledge and understanding of security issues are of critical importance for students of technical specialties. It helps them to be aware of the threats and risks associated with armed conflict and make the right decisions to ensure personal and collective security, and provides the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively respond to emergencies and save lives. Therefore, in the article: information on the state of higher education in Ukraine until February 2022 has been studied and summarised; the need of students of higher technical education to study security-oriented disciplines during the war was investigated; an expert survey was conducted among students who are studying for the Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees of two higher technical educational institutions – the State Higher Educational Institution “Donetsk National Technical University” and Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture. It was established that about eighty percent of the respondents are in favour of mandatory study of security-oriented disciplines during martial law, as an opportunity to ensure their own safety and the safety of others, help others and be useful in war conditions. A new concept of civil security education in higher technical institutions under martial law from the point of view of studying individual disciplines is proposed, which consists of the following: improvement of training plans for higher education applicants. recommendations for students of technical higher education institutions to study the following disciplines (in order of priority): “Life safety”, “Occupational safety”, “Fire safety”, “Civil protection”, “Environmental safety”, “Psychology of hazards”. Mandatory courses for students on pre-medical care, psychological help for themselves and others, military training should be introduced. Scientific innovation: a scientific approach has been developed to clarify the new concept of civil security education in higher technical institutions under martial law. Practical significance: the results of the work can be used in the preparation of educational plans for applicants of higher technical educational institutions.

  • Handrie Noprisson + 6 more

This study attempted to point out the role of social capital and explicit as well as tacit knowledge sharing to build human capital of students in higher educational institution in Indonesia. The research model was adapted and inspired from Aslam et al.'s model, however, we modified knowledge sharing variable by dividing it into two types of knowledge, i.e. explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge. The data collection conducted by spreading online questionnaires to students in several higher educational institutions in Indonesia. As many as 420 valid sample data was used to test hypotheses by using structural equation modeling (SEM). The result shows that the influence of component social factor between tacit knowledge sharing and explicit knowledge sharing is different. The components of social capital that influence to explicit knowledge sharing are shared language, social interaction ties, norm of reciprocity, identification and trust. However, the components of social capital that influence to explicit knowledge sharing are identification, norm of reciprocity, social interaction ties, shared language, shared vision. Moreover, tacit knowledge sharing is more influenced to human capital than explicit knowledge sharing. The result of this research can be used as basic knowledge for system developer to define features of knowledge sharing system in higher educational institution in Indonesia.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand the outcomes of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in the light of COVID-19 concerning the students of higher educational institutions (HEIs) in India. The COVID-19 has disrupted the normal teaching-learning role across the world and has put everyone in a nightmare. HEIs are now requesting students to take up MOOCs to explore and attain knowledge and the same is even followed by the corporate institutions. MOOCs are one of the crisis management solutions to ensure that education is continuous and not disrupted. Design/methodology/approach The data included in this research has been collected from students of HEIs across India using a convenient sampling method. The collected data was exposed to a factor analysis using a principal component analysis (PCA) technique to reduce multiple dimensions. Findings The various stakeholders such as the government, HEIs and the MOOC providers have to play a crucial role in developing intellectual human assets for the nation’s growth and progression by extending flexible and cost-effective learning facilities. Education should be free to boost up the learning motivation, and hence it is the responsibility of the stakeholders to provide few courses free of cost, which will increase the rate of enrolment and student participation. Research limitations/implications From the research, it is well understood that MOOCs are useful to keep oneself updated with the market and industry trends especially when the world is focusing on business analytics, artificial intelligence and other technologically driven topics and concepts. Practical implications The present study contributes to the growing body of evidence that MOOCs play an important role in providing flexibility in learning. In the future, if there are similar crisis, which will disrupt education, then the best alternative will be MOOC through which many stakeholders will benefit. Education should be free to boost up the learning motivation, and hence it is the responsibility of the stakeholders to provide few courses free of cost, which will increase the rate of enrolment and student participation. Social implications Education is a service for the society which will have a long-term positive impact on improving the standard of living of the people. Hence, MOOCs can be one of the educational elements to provide learning opportunities to all age groups. Originality/value This study has explored the perception of MOOCs among the students of HEIs in India in the COVID-19 pandemic. The fresh data collected from the students is a reflection of their experiences during the COVID-19 lockdown. Indeed, it is quite surprising to know that majority of the respondents have arranged to learn during the pandemic, which shows the thirst and urge to learn. Digital technology and tools are welcomed and accepted by the student community.

Making Higher Education Institutions Gender-Sensitive
  • Dec 2, 2022
  • Debdatta Chowdhury

The years 2012 and 2013 played decisive roles in drawing our attention to the issue of gender violence, especially for women, in the workplace, which also came to include higher education institutions (HEI). The Vishaka Guidelines (1997), Verma Committee Report (2013) and Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act (2013) drew our attention to the need for having specific laws, redressal mechanisms and gender-sensitization programmes in HEI and led to the UGC (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal of Sexual Harassment of Women Employees and Students in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations (2015). Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and gender-sensitization programmes became mandatory in Indian HEIs. What remained unaddressed, though, were the questions of gender sensitization in HEIs in the form of everyday classroom practices, pedagogical questions, curriculum-making process and intersectional approaches towards students’ diverse experiences. This chapter intends to understand how gender sensitization works in HEIs, in the context of the above-mentioned concerns and if merely having ICCs are effective in addressing the same. The paper locates the foundational idea behind Indian education policies within the larger framework of a global approach to gender sensitization of education and takes into account the relevant reports and studies of HEIs in India within the context of gendering higher education. It links these observations with actual conversations that the author had with interviewees associated in some capacity with HEIs in Kolkata and surrounding areas, in trying to establish that a flawed educational philosophy will remain ill-equipped to address the realities of a very-gendered education system that India runs.

The article deals with the peculiarities of the use of interactive learning technologies to increase the motivation of students of the higher medical educational institution to study medical and biological physics, which is based on the knowledge of natural sciences. A graphical comparative analysis of students' responses to questions from the author's questionnaire to the use of interactive technologies and after the graphical comparison was made with the help of the program of the table processor. The emphasis is on changing the motivation to learn in the students' answers to the second questionnaire. Obvious becomes the fact of the need for additional educational work with students on the topics of medical history to help in the formation of their ultimate learning objectives. Educational activity of students in higher educational institutions is possible, if based on motives which correspond to direct products of this activity - theoretical knowledge. Such motives are theoretical in content, educational-professional interests. If there are no such interests or they are not sufficiently developed, the student's educational activities are guided by other secondary motives: obtaining approval from parents, the desire to obtain a diploma in higher education, and have a great salary in the future. Then we can say that there is no psychological basis for the deployment of full-fledged educational and professional activities. Therefore, giving students the opportunity to improve their theoretical knowledge about the history of medicine, known doctors, about the complexities of their future profession may in some way induce a deeper understanding of the ethics of the future profession, more detailed study of various disciplines.
