• Kholood Ahmed Tanash + 2 more

This article aims to examine the external factors that impact the profitability of Jordanian Islamic and traditional banks. This paper was applied to all Jordanian banks: 3 Islamic banks and 12 traditional banks. The study was based on annual panel data for the years from 2011 to 2023. Data were collected from the annual reports of banks, reports of the Association of Banks in Jordan, and reports of the Central Bank of Jordan. The study used many determinants that affect profitability: ROA, Concentration Ratio (CR), Market Share (MR), gross domestic product (GDP), growth rate (GR), consumer price index (inflation) (CPI), and money supply (M2). The data were analyzed using a model of the effects of randomness. The paper found that Market Share (MR) and money supply (M2) have a positive impact on the profitability of Jordanian banks. It turned out that the Concentration Ratio (CR) and the consumer price index (CPI) have a negative impact on the profitability of Jordanian banks. It was also pointed out that gross domestic product (GDP) and growth rate (GR) have no impact on the profitability of Jordanian banks. The study recommends that Jordanian Islamic banks continuously monitor the development of their profits, as it affects their continuity and ability to compete. There is a need for Jordanian Islamic banks to explore new investment areas to exploit the volume of deposits available to them to increase profits.

Perception of stakeholders on corporate social responsibility of Islamic Banks in Jordan
 • May 3, 2016
 • EuroMed Journal of Business
 • Venere Di Bella + 1 more

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the various perceptions of stakeholders on corporate social responsibility (CSR) of Islamic Banks in Jordan. Design/methodology/approach – The data are collected from multiple stakeholder groups of two Islamic Banks in particular: Jordan Islamic Bank for Finance and Investment and Islamic International Arab Bank. The methods adopted to examine the data are the descriptive analysis and analysis of variance. With regard to the purpose of this research, the concept of Islamic CSR and its dimensions have been considered as: rooted in the Islamic ethical system, represented through the profit and loss arrangements, embedded within the principles behind financial services provided by Islamic Banks, and benchmarked by the Accounting and Auditing Organization of Islamic Financial Institutions’ (AAOIFI) corporate governance standard. Findings – The results indicate that stakeholders have expressed a positive attitude toward the concept of CSR. Proving that the issue of CSR is an important factor in Islamic banking and to the perception of various stakeholders’ groups, the focus shifted into identifying the dimensions which shape the Islamic CSR. In reference to previous research results, the Islamic banking sector in Jordan has an in-built dimension that promotes social responsibility. Practical implications – The study recommends that Islamic Banks improve CSR activities in order to better exploit this commitment with a cultural identity yet again. This identity has a direct influence on the branding of Islamic finance in local markets. The structure of offered products reflects regional beliefs and provides a suite of services. In terms of services, the services provided are geared toward specific market segments within local communities. This as a result directs a number of strategic decisions made by Islamic Banks, which are based on the structure of their offerings, brand identity and customer service levels. Originality/value – In Jordan, studies about the perception of stakeholders on CSR from an Islamic perspective are almost non-existent. Thus, providing solutions for study questions and presenting empirical evidence regarding CSR issues will certainly add a new dimension to the literature. Moreover, the conclusions and recommendations may help regulators and decision makers in enhancing the competitiveness and the sustainability of the Islamic banking sector in Jordan.

Risk disclosure and financial performance of Islamic banks in Jordan: the moderating role of financial technology
 • Dec 1, 2024
 • Indonesian Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
 • Mohammed Abd-Akarim Almomani + 1 more

Risk disclosure (RD) is important to inform investors. However, few studies examined this variable in developing countries and in Islamic bank context. This research investigates how RD affect financial performance (FP) of Islamic banks in Jordan. It also examines the moderating role of financial technology (FinTech). We use a quantitative method to examine how mandatory risk disclosure (MRD) and voluntary risk disclosure (VRD) impact return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) in Islamic banks operating in Jordan. Our results show that both MRD and VRD have a significant effect on FP of Islamic banks. Moreover, FinTech acts as a moderator in the connection between risk disclosure (MRD and VRD) and FP performance. The effect was compared before and after coronaviruses disease 2019 (COVID-19) and it shows that the COVID-19 has increased the effect of MRD and VRD on FP of Islamic banks. More focus on VRD and MRD will enhance the FP of Islamic banks in Jordan.

Opportunities for the success of digital Islamic banks in Jordan
 • Apr 25, 2025
 • International Journal of Innovative Research and Scientific Studies
 • Hamza Ahmad Tanash + 3 more

This study aims to explore the prospects for the success of digital Islamic banks in Jordan by examining the factors that influence customers' attitudes toward adopting digital banking services. A quantitative research approach was employed, utilizing a questionnaire grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which is derived from the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). The study surveyed a sample of 556 respondents, and data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Model validity was confirmed through the Chi-square and SRMR tests. The findings reveal that ease of use, cost, and facilitating conditions significantly influence the perceived usefulness of digital banking. Furthermore, perceived usefulness, security, and awareness were found to impact users’ trust in digital banks. While awareness and social influence showed no direct effect on digital banking adoption, trust emerged as a central mediating factor. Additionally, both perceived usefulness and security indirectly affect adoption through trust, whereas awareness does not exert an indirect influence. The study concludes that there are substantial opportunities for the success of digital Islamic banking in Jordan. It recommends that Islamic banks expand the implementation of digital banking services to reduce operational costs, enhance public awareness, and build trust, factors that are critical to securing long-term success in the digital financial landscape.

Using Friedman Test the preliminary data, which were collected using a questionnaire were analyzed. The finding of this study has shown that the selection of Islamic banks seems to be primarily a mixture of all the 12 criteria that have been tested. In terms of importance, the study showed that friendly personnel, Islamic reputation and image, and product price are in the top three, in order, as expressed by the study sample, while factors like location being near home or work, convenience and environmental practice and impact seem to be the least significant factors by participants when choosing an Islamic bank. One of the most important finding of this study is that Islamic banks in Jordan cannot attract their customers by the religion aspect only; it would require Islamic banks to properly understand the needs and expectations of existing and prospective customers.

English abstract: The study aims to demonstrate the impact of one of the most important applications and formulas conducted by Islamic banks in Jordan, which is the sale by installments on the return of the owners of investment accounts. To achieve the goal of the study, we used the descriptive method and the inductive approach in extrapolating the opinions of scholars. A descriptive analytical approach was also used, relying on data from the Jordan Islamic Bank and the Islamic International Arab Bank during the period (2005-2015). The study concluded with a set of results, most importantly: the sale by installment is one of the most important and safest formulas applied by Islamic banks in Jordan due to the advantages offered by this type of sale to both banks and customers, including, the positive impact on the return of the owners of absolute investment accounts, which contributes to raise the level of profitability and distribute it to customers and shareholders alike. Also Islamic banks are responsible for the success of the Islamic alternative to finance by achieving a return that enhances the profitability of investors and leads them to believe in this alternative under unequal competition from traditional banks, which is not restricted by a moral or legal constraint, unlike Islamic banks.

 • International Journal of Innovation and Business Strategy (IJIBS)
 • Ayat Abdalgani + 2 more

This study utilizes Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure the efficiency of conventional and Islamic banks in Jordan at the first stage. The data covers the period from 2008 and 2019, and a total of 13 conventional and 3 Islamic banks. In the second stage, the data were then analyzed by different parametric and non-parametric tests (e.g., T-test, Mann–Whitney and Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests). The findings reveal that, overall, Islamic banks have higher level of efficiency compared to conventional banks. However, when we have taken the Arab Spring (AS), we observed that Islamic banks have better level of efficiency before AS (2008-2010) but conventional banks outperformed after the AS (2011-2019). Furthermore, we also did not find any significant differences in efficiency between young and old banks. In contrast, there were significant differences in efficiency between small and large banks and the latter outperformed the former. The findings shed light on the relative efficiency levels of these two types of banks, providing insights for policymakers, regulators, and bank management.
