Abstract

Mobile robots are increasingly used in various environments including care environments. Although the main task of the mobile robot is typically to transfer materials and equipment independently, the robot's technical characteristics could also be harnessed to various other tasks. The possibilities are even wider if other technologies or systems are integrated into the mobile robot. In this article, by combining mobile robots, passive UHF RFID and machine vision in a unique way, we create a system that can take actions in improving fire safety in care environments. Through a co-design approach, we defined the practical needs of the created scenario and designed the needed system properties. Next, we established a functional laboratory prototype system of the created scenario. Our next step is practical evaluation of the developed prototype system including tests in a real use environment as well as further development of the sub-systems.
