Abstract
The kinetics and mechanism of Mn(II) catalysed decomposition of peroxomonosulphate (PMS) in highly alkaline medium was studied at 313 K with a constant ionic strength .The value of the pseudo first order rate constant k obs , decreased with increase in [PMS] 0 and increased with increase in [OH − ] and [Mn(II)]. Analysis of the result revealed that the formation of manganese peroxide (Mn(O 2 )) as molecular intermediate, which decomposed rapidly. The reaction was studied at four different temperatures. Kinetic and activation parameters were determined and the reaction scheme was proposed.
