Abstract
More than 80 different proteins, glycoproteins, collagens, proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans, constitute the extra cellular matrix (ECM), the complex structure surrounding cells in solid tissues and organs. Tissue remodeling, i.e. the changes in amount, type and architecture of these proteins is critical in important physiological events like growth, development and reproduction as in disease. ECM protein degradation is largely (but not exclusively) dependent on a class of neutral endoproteases called MMPs.
