ABSTRACT This paper explores the translation of Chinese traditional cultural elements and historical references embedded in The Classic of Tea (Chajing) by Lu Yu. Through a multi-perspective analysis that includes historical, social, and ethical lenses, and drawing on the concept of presupposition and, more precisely, mistake presupposition, it shows the pivotal role of translation in disseminating Chinese traditional culture. It examines how these cultural elements have been conveyed in two translations. By contrasting the translations of The Classic of Tea by American scholar Francis Ross Carpenter and by Chinese professors Jiang Xin and Jiang Yi, the study identifies challenges such as historical, economic and cultural elements and the strategies used to render them into English. The study demonstrates that translating culturally loaded texts, such as tea literature, is a process that needs to convey the full significance of cultural elements in order to preserve its cultural inheritance, requiring translators to balance fidelity to the original text with readability for target readers.

"Where there are Chinese people, there is Chinese education". The Malaysian Chinese ancestors practised Chinese education in Malaysia since their arrival and with their efforts, Malaysia has the most comprehensive and systematic Chinese education in Southeast Asia. It is also considered the country that has preserved Chinese culture the best (Qian, 2017). Since 2011, the Chinese language has been offered as an elective subject in the standards-based curriculum for primary school (KSSR) syllabus. Since introducing Chinese into classrooms, there have been two versions of Chinese textbooks for the national primary schools: (KSSR) National Primary School Chinese Textbook from grade 1 until grade 6. Its subsequent revision in 2017 KSSR (Semakan 2017) National Primary School Chinese Textbook has been applied up to grade 5. By studying these two versions of the textbooks, this paper will discuss how Chinese culture is depicted in Malaysian national primary school Chinese textbooks. It will also analyse the elements of Chinese culture and subsequently investigate whether cultural content is necessary to be reinforced in national primary school Chinese textbooks for its text to be enriched. The research objective is determined using integrated studies done within and beyond Malaysia and includes relevant materials, research reports, literature, and dissertation papers. Through literature review, this paper summarises, categories, and analyses content about traditional Chinese cultural elements that can be found in both versions of the Chinese textbooks in national primary school. The traditional Chinese cultures found in both versions of textbooks are listed under seven elements which are: Traditional Chinese Festivities, Traditional Chinese Folk Games, Traditional Chinese Family Appellations, Traditional Chinese Food Culture, Traditional Chinese Arts, Traditional Chinese Customs, Chinese Literature. The collected content is then categorised, arranged, and analysed. A deduction can then be made to provide conclusive recommendations. It can be deduced that the textbooks are pretty packed with relevant and related Chinese cultural elements, but primarily, it is apparent that the Chinese culture is mainly influenced by local cultural elements, which are very close to our daily life. National primary school Chinese language education plays a role in cultural dissemination. It enables pupils of different ethnic backgrounds to learn Chinese and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. As well as can help prevent misunderstandings caused by cultural differences.

The cultural element is the minimum unit of a cultural system. The systematic categorizing, organizing, and retrieval of the traditional Chinese cultural elements are essential prerequisites for the realization of effective extracting and rational utilization, as well as the prerequisite for exploiting the contemporary value of the traditional Chinese culture. To build an objective, integrated, and reliable classification method and a system of traditional Chinese cultural elements, this study takes the text of Taiping Imperial Encyclopedia in Northern Song Dynasty as the primary data source. The unsupervised word segmentation methods are used to detect Out‐of‐Vocabulary (OOV), and then the segmentation results by the THULAC tool with and without custom dictionary are compared. The TF‐IDF algorithm is applied to extract the keywords of cultural elements and the Ochiia coefficient is introduced to create complex networks of traditional Chinese cultural elements. After analyzing the topological characteristics of the network, the community detection algorithm is used to identify the topics of cultural elements. Finally, a “Means‐Ends” two‐dimensional orthogonal classification system is established to categorize the topics. The results showed that the degree distribution in the complex network of Chinese traditional cultural elements is a scale‐free network with γ = 2.28. The network shows a structure of community and hierarchy features. The top 12 communities have taken up to 91.77% of the scale of the networks. Those 12 topics of the traditional Chinese cultural elements are circularly distributed in the orthogonal system of cultural elements’ categorization.

China’s mobile gaming industry has grown rapidly over the past 15 years. Game character costumes have also diversified, blending fashion consumption and inspiring new mobile game costume styles. Traditional cultural elements are also being included in mobile game costumes. This study explores the application of Chinese mobile game character costumes and their expression in marketable designs. Using an image analysis, we examine the top six Chinese mobile games in 2020–2023 and divide them into two categories: Chinese culture and non-Chinese culture themes. we screened a total of 120 sets of popular game costumes and conducted a content and data analysis using historical costume analysis methods to analyze traditional cultural elements in the mobile game costumes. Traditional cultural elements in the mobile game costumes were divided into five categories: dressing characters, clothing style, patterns, accessories, and costume names. Our analysis showed that costumes with traditional Chinese cultural elements were important design elements in popular mobile games, especially those in mobile games with a Chinese cultural background. The design elements had three main characteristics in common: cultural integrity, classic, and fantasy. Traditional cultural elements were characterized by cultural integrity, many drawing on classic styles in traditional clothing. Fantasy elements, such as mythology, religion, and martial arts in traditional Chinese culture also featured prominently. This study highlights traditional culture’s role in mobile game costume design, analyzes its use in Chinese markets, and provides strategic support for game companies in China.

This study seeks to enhance the integration of traditional Chinese cultural and artistic elements into contemporary architectural design, providing a rich source of inspiration. This paper investigates the connections between modern architectural symbols and traditional Chinese architectural and cultural elements. It identifies key characteristics of traditional architectural elements and proposes the integration of superficial structural features into contemporary designs, focusing on architectural space, form, and color. Utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology, this research designs a program that merges traditional Chinese elements with contemporary architectural practices. A specific test site was selected to implement this design. The study conducts a quantitative analysis of the space, form, and color characteristics extracted from the test site. The results indicate an overall symbolic value of the test building at 7.566. The analysis identifies the “stone lion” as an element with a high degree of alignment with traditional Chinese architectural elements, with nearly 50% of the participants rating its compatibility as 4 or above. Further quantitative analysis of the integration of color elements reveals that the color scale of the building’s main body predominantly ranges from 0 to 65, with a brightness level of 25 to 65, aligning with the aesthetic principles of traditional Chinese architecture.
