Abstract

Mission Concept: Cave and Lave Tube Exploration on Moon, Mars and Icy Moons for Eventual Settlement

Highlights

  • In the few decades, we aspire to send human and robotic explorers to every corner of our solar system to perform orbital, surface and even subsurface exploration

  • The High-Performance Green Propulsion (HPGP) provides higher specific impulse and higher propellant density, which results in increased performance compared to traditional propulsion

  • With a high temperature pyrolysis oven coupled to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer instrument called Volatile Analysis by Pyrolysis of Regolith (VAPoR), solid samples can be heated to high temperatures in vacuum to determine the composition of volatiles released as a function of temperature [20, 21]

SHORT ABSTRACT

Future missions will be targeting extreme and rugged environments such as pits, caves, canyons, cliffs and crater rims of the Moon, Mars and icy moons. Robots called SphereX that would explore these sites with the intent on setting human bases that would be naturally shielded from surface hazards
