Misread Signals: Perception, Emotion, and Nonverbal Conflicts on Bandung Streets
Roadways are not merely functional spaces for vehicular movement but also complex arenas of social communication. In the city of Bandung, road users' diverse social and cultural backgrounds increase the potential for misinterpretations of nonverbal communication, often escalating into verbal and even physical conflicts. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing shifts in road users' perceptions, the mechanisms behind nonverbal communication failures, and the role of emotional control in mitigating traffic conflicts. This research uses a qualitative approach, participatory observation, and document analysis methods. Observations were conducted at several strategic locations in Bandung, such as the Dago, Setiabudi, and Buah Batu areas, to capture the nonverbal behaviors of road users authentically. The findings reveal that situational pressures, biases from past experiences, and emotional states of road users trigger perception shifts. Communication failures occur through misinterpretations of nonverbal symbols, weak emotional control, and conflict escalation. Emotional control is key to restraining aggressive responses and minimizing misunderstandings. This study concludes by emphasizing the importance of integrating emotional education into traffic safety campaigns. By strengthening emotional awareness and symbol comprehension, it is hoped that a safer, more harmonious, and humanistic traffic culture will be cultivated in Bandung.

Nonverbal communication is the primary channel for the communication of emotion. The abilities to express, control, and decode emotions are important social skills. In this study, we investigated the effects of hemispheric brain dominance and sex on emotional social skills, specifically emotional expressivity, sensitivity, and control. Using the measurements of handedness, we classified participants as being standard, mixed, or anomalous dominant. We presumed that hemispheric brain dominance and sex would interact to influence emotional expressivity, sensitivity, and control. Analysis revealed that brain dominance and sex interacted to influence negative emotional expressivity and emotional control. Specifically, mixed dominant (MD) males scored highest in negative emotional expressivity and lowest in emotional control, whereas MD females scored lowest on negative emotional expressivity and second highest on emotional control. In general, MD men and women reported behaviors opposite of traditional sex differences in emotional expression.

Good municipal waste management is very important for a sustainable urban order. Good municipal waste management can reduce negative impacts on the environment, public health and natural resources. The application of a Garbage Bank is one of the solutions for good municipal waste management. This is due to the concept of a Garbage Bank which is aligned with sustainable city management. One of the principles that is effective in helping the performance of waste management at the Garbage Bank is a circular economy based on 3R (reduce, reuse, and recycle). The application of this concept needs to be supported by campaigns involving various activities such as outreach, education, training and promotion which aim to increase public awareness about the importance of sustainable waste management. This study aims to examine the Garbage Bank campaign strategy as an effort to support the achievement of Target 11.6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), namely “Urban Waste Management”, by implementing a 3R-based circular economy approach in Cipaganti Village, Bandung City. According to Grime (1987), among several factors, the human error factor contributed 95 percent to traffic accidents, and denoted the sole factor that led approximately 65 percent to the accidents. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Status Report in 2013 revealed that among the road users' categories, motorcyclists noted the highest number of 36 percent that were most likely to cause a death during the traffic accident, especially in Indonesia. This paper therefore aimed to analyze the extent to which human behavior, as the major factor, has affected the traffic accident by considering the accident history that occurred over the last five years in Bandung based on gender and age categories. The motorcyclist driving behavior was examined based on DBQ's (Driver Behavior Questionnaire) theory, which represents three factors, namely, lapses, errors and violations. In addition, the study also conducted a statistical analysis through SEM's (Structural Equation Modeling) method in order to investigate the extent to which the cause of accident has been correlated with the riders' behavior on the road. The result of the study then showed that there are differences between male and female motorcyclists' accident in Bandung, whereby the male riders' accident due to lapses gained 0.232 of the positive correlation, while most of female riders who got accident due to violation noted 0.227 of the positive correlation.

This article discusses the failure of persuasive communication performed by social workers in the event of mentoring street children in an Indonesian city of Yogyakarta. The existence of the street children in the city remains to be an unweavering issue despite the presence of social welfare provided by governmental agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). A number of shelters takes place to house, mentor and educate these underprivileged kids but has little to no effect in stopping the kids from returning to living on the streets. Failure in communication during the mentoring process between social workers and the kids seems to be one of the determinants of the shorthcomings. Hence, this particular study sought to evaluate the factors that produce such failures. Using a qualitative approach, this study interviewed some social workers in Rumah Singgah Anak Mandiri , one of the famous shelters for street children in Yogyakarta. The results show that the social workers’ lack of persuasive communication skills becomes the main cause of the shortcomings. Precisely, most of them do not possess the capacity, powerful communication, control of emotion, message appeals, organization of the messages, and cultural knowledge in serving counselling sessions with the underprivileged kids. Keywords: Persuasive communication, communication failure, street children, social workers, Indonesia.

As one of the largest cities in Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya, Bandung is a major tourist destination in West Java because of its strategic location. Besides having heritage tourism, nature tourism, and culinary tours, Bandung is also known as a shopping town with malls and factory outlets spread throughout the city. Nevertheless, the uncontrolled development of shopping centers and culinary may potentially impact negatively especially congestion in Bandung City. Currently, traffic congestion seems to be a difficult thing to be avoided in Bandung City. Congestion happens apart due to the increased volume of vehicles and due to construction in some areas which are formerly housing that becomes factory outlets and cafes. The impacts are reducing time efficiency of road users because of time spent on the road, air pollution, as well as inconvenience for road users. If it is viewed from legal framework, license issuance for factory outlets and cafes must refer to RUTR Bandung which means that changes in urban planning that is not in accordance with the urban planning will lead to a negative impact; that is more congestion in regions. Therefore, obedience to law, especially law license can certainly solve this problem.

A human driver determines his/her driving action by predicting future behavior of other road users based on the consideration of relative relationships and reactions between all players. To get as close as possible to human driving behavior, it is important to predict the early and long-term behavior of other road users. For this sake, many motion-based methods has been proposed, although only for short-term prediction. On the other hand, reasoning-based methods for long-term prediction have been proposed recently. However, they can only predict the latest behavior to the observation and do not consider uncertainty, which is necessary to realize smooth autonomous driving behavior. Therefore, we propose a method that predicts long-term behavior of other road users with estimated probabilities based on semantic reasoning that considers interactions among various players. For this purpose, we define an ontology that provides a conceptual description of all road users with their interactions, and infer the likely behaviors with their associated probabilities using Markov Logic Network (MLN). This framework is used with a actual vehicle as it approaches intersections, to demonstrate its applicability. Results from the real-time implementation on the vehicle, operating under controlled conditions, indicate that the proposed approach predicts a sequence of behavioral possibilities with their associated probabilities as expected.

This paper mainly studies about the road user's behavior when crossing urban intersection, including the confliction patterns among motors, non-motors and pedestrians, the influence on motor vehicles of non-motors' and pedestrians' violating behavior, and departure headways with and without disturbance on the urban signalized intersection. Most researchers pay much attention to the work of planning method or control strategy, and bring forward various simulating models, but no deeper researches about confliction among motor vehicles, non-motor vehicles and pedestrians are presented. Distinguished from traditional simulation models, this paper seeks to statistic models of road user's confliction behavior based on traffic data collected from urban intersections, and validate these models using different traffic data. It is shown that these established statistic models can apply to mixed traffic flow condition appropriately, which means these models can be used in traffic engineering, micro traffic simulation and traffic signal control strategy.

As a major public health problem, road traffic injuries (RTIs) affect all social groups of the society.1 Every year, around 1.3 million people die and 20-50 million people get injured or disabled as a result of the RTIs worldwide.2 The figure of RTIs is more alarming in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).1-2 RTIs in Iran are very important public health problems in the whole country. 3-6 When World Health Organization launched its call to action, it invited members of the public to be a part of the solution.1 The initiative focused on five important courses of action for the general public of which included: no speeding; wearing a seat-belt; wearing a helmet; never drink and drive; and being visible on the road. Being seen on the road is a fundamental requirement for safety of all road users, particularly vulnerable road users.2 Inadequate visibility plays a key role in RTIs during both day and night for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists as well as car drivers.1 Being visible on the road seems to be a neglected action and hence it is still a major challenge, particularly in low and middle- income countries like Iran. Accordingly, it was decided to explore barriers related to pedestrians’ visibility on the road and to find suggestions for improvement based on road users’ experiences in Iran. Seventeen face-to-face interviews were conducted with road users including: pedestrian, motorcyclist, cyclist and car drivers between February-June 2013. A qualitative approach by means of content analysis was used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that barriers related to pedestrians’ visibility included a lack of knowledge of the importance of being seen, negative attitude towards using reflectors, a sense of being unusual when using reflectors, the significance of dark clothes as well as cultural support on wearing dark clothes and a lack of production of reflectors in the country. Suggestions for improvement included a public education campaign, effective law legislation, more rigorous law enforcements in terms of being visible on the road, more facilities for production of reflective materials and a more importantly further availability of reflectors in the country. In sum, the major barriers in terms of being visible of pedestrians on the road were identified as a lack of knowledge of importance of visibility and negative attitude in using reflective materials in both public and stakeholders. Suggestion for improvement of being visible on the roads covered educational campaigns and stricter law enforcements as well as more availability of reflectors in the society.
