Abstract

The present paper reports on three new achiral terbiumIII inorganics that emit strong green-color magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL) (|gMCPL| ≤ 5.4 × 10−3 T−1 at 490–550 nm) when embedded in a KBr pellet in the presence of a 1.7 T external magnetic field. The signs of the green MCPL spectra are controllable by altering the S-up and N-up directions of the external magnetic field. Divalent manganeseII and trivalent terbiumIII emit similar green luminescence; however, their wavelengths and MCPL characteristics are very different. Hence, we anticipate that these green-color MCPL substances can be used as new security pigments.
