Abstract

The resurgence of the traditional minicomputer, a rack-mounted system with a single processor built around dozens of chips, is discussed. The machines offered by the various manufacturers are outlined. The difficulties ahead for the smaller minicomputer manufacture in view of Digital Equipment's growing dominance of the market is examined. IBMs response to Digital's challenge is discussed. Some offerings that focused on enhanced numeric capabilities are described, as well as several hypercubes that came on the market.
