Abstract

The region known in the literary tradition as Canaan comprises the southern end of the ecological macrozone commonly known as the Fertile Crescent. And while northern and highland regions derive their water supply from wells, much of Canaan lies at the margins of less fertile land, and subsistence can be precarious as even minor climatic shifts can have a significant impact. The broader region can be divided into 10 ecological subzones: the upper Galilee, lower Galilee, Huleh Valley, Jordan Valley, Jezreel Valley, Samaria, Judean Foothills, northern coastal plain, southern coastal plain, and the northern Negev.
