Abstract

The calcination and sintering behavior of barium strontium titanate was investigated using microwave power absorption. With microwave power, BaCO 3, SrCO 3 and TiO 2 powders were calcined at 1100°C for 45 min, whereas conventional calcination requires typically more than 5 h at 1150°C. Pressed samples of microwave calcined Ba 0.65Sr 0.35TiO 3 were sintered in 30 min at 1350°C using a microwave cavity. The permittivity and loss tangent of the sintered samples were also measured. It is shown that microwave calcination and sintering lead to an improvement in the dielectric properties.
