Abstract

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics Na 0.5Bi 4.5Ti 4O 15 + x wt% MnCO 3 have been prepared by a conventional sintering technique, and their structure, piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties have been studied. Our results show that MnCO 3 is effective in promoting the grain growth and densification of the ceramics. After the addition of MnCO 3, the remanent polarization P r , piezoelectric coefficient d 33, electromechanical coupling coefficient k p and mechanical quality factor Q m of the ceramics are increased, whilst the loss tangent tan δ is decreased. For the ceramic added with 0.375 wt% MnCO 3, the dielectric and piezoelectric properties become optimum: d 33 = 28 pC/N, k p = 0.06, Q m = 3290, ε r = 140 and tan δ = 0.3%. Our results also demonstrate that the ceramic exhibits a good thermal stability up to around 500 °C.
