Abstract

ABSTRACTThis thought piece is interested in the impact of certain digital conditions on pornography. Namely that the context of the content, as inscribed in its original presentation, can sometimes get lost as it is shortened and shared across tube sites. What we find when this happens is that these videos are sometimes then interpreted as real sex by those clicking through. In this article I consider one implication resultant of the removal of context, namely the emergence of viewer speculation around the ‘authenticity’ of the clip as it circulates decontextualized across the web.
