Abstract

Technology assumes a dual role in the context of scientific research in microgravity: It should enable experimental investigations by providing the means to carry out detailed and accurate measurements in a difficult environment, but it can also generate new approaches for technological advances specifically directed towards low- and reduced-gravity applications. In this paper, we will take a preliminary and cursory look at the match between the general requirements of scientific research in microgravity and new technological developments within the context of the strategic goals of the new Office of Biological and Physical Sciences Research. In the second part of the paper, examples of some speculative suggestions regarding specific technologies of particular interest to the microgravity research program will be discussed.
