Abstract

This article discusses the influence of Marxism in Foucault’s questioning of psychology. It also considers how this questioning could be used in the Marxist field in which psychological knowledge is usually conceived and criticized as ideology. After recalling the critical analysis of psychology in the young Foucault and his explicit use of notions coming from Marxism, it is shown how some of these notions continue to intervene surreptitiously in the next three decades. Traces of Marxism are detected in works such as Mental Illness and Personality, Mental Illness and Psychology, History of Madness in the Classical Period, Words and Things, The Archaeology of Knowledge, Discipline and Punishment, History of Sexuality and some courses at the College de France.
