Abstract

The aim of the study was to present methods and costs of managing bio-wastein a company engaged in warehousing activities. The research subject was a company involved in importing and distributing fruits to popular retail networks in the Polish market. A review of Polish and foreign literature on waste management methods, with a particular focus on bio-waste, was conducted. Primary data was collected through documentary methods at the investigated company and through participant observation at the warehouse facility. Additionally, a guided interview was conducted with one of the co-owners of the company, and a case study was employed. The research was conducted in October 2022. The study identified the products traded by the company and the quantity of bio-waste generated during its operations. In 2022, bio-waste accounted for no more than 2% of the total quantity of imported fruits. The highest share of bio-waste in the total mass of the received goods was attributed to plums (2.45%), while oranges had the lowest share (1.2%). The total cost of bio-waste disposal at the studied warehouse from January to November 2022 amounted to 8,642.06 euros. The disposal costs did not exceed 1.5% of the company’s revenues during the analyzed period. The company sends 100% of its bio-waste to an external entity for composting.
