Methimazole is one of several thionamide drugs used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. It works by inhibiting the thyroid peroxidases (TPO) that catalyze the iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the oxidative coupling of iodinated tyrosines.
