This study aims to analyse power, dominance, racial discrimination, and power exercise that is narratively established through a subtle network of metaphors in a fiction work, The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner exposes the socioeconomic conditions in the borderlands of Pakistan and Afghanistan, revealing the differences between power manipulation and the domestic performance of powerful social groups. The work also explores how religious and status dichotomies circumvent the progress of minority groups and align their physical features with their receding power and financial features. An adopted model of critical discourse analysis (CDA) indicates power, economic, and racial dichotomies in the book while revealing the shades of metaphors through conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) in a post-colonial text. Dogmatic ideographs are perpetuated in every public sphere through language and established gradually through unprovoking tools of metaphors. The metaphors are uncovered through CMT, providing a helpful understanding of different conceptual domains. Rhetorically, CDA helped reveal the racial discrimination, human rights violations, and hatred against minorities embedded in the selected metaphors. This investigation is very significant in connection with the current scenario of cross-cultural studies, as it mainly depicts the prevailing social trends regarding two different settings. The study may benefit intelligentsia interested in post-colonial and decolonial discourse and diaspora literature. This research discusses critical discourse analysis based on Van Dijk's theory on the Instagram account of @Sajak_Maluku. It aims to explain the theme and moral lessons embedded in the discourse on the Instagram account of @Sajak_Maluku. This was descriptive qualitative research. The data source in this research was the Instagram account of @Sajak_Maluku. The technique of data collection was done by documenting the screenshots of the images containing the discourse on the @Sajak_Maluku Instagram account. Furthermore, the discourse was analyzed using the critical discourse analysis method with a content analysis model based on Van Dijk's theory. The critical discourse analysis method was carried out to explain the hidden purpose in the discourse, while content analysis aims to explain the content of the discourse. The results of this research show that there are two themes in the discourse on the @Sajak_Maluku Instagram account from June 1 until June 10, 2022, which are self-reflection and religious themes. Moral values which can be concluded from religious themes are how we have to be thankful for our everyday life, and we have to keep praying for everything from self-reflection theme is advice to ourselves in relation to what we face every day.

TRANSLATION ANALYSIS ON IDEOLOGICAL LEXICONS CHOICE IN HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE BOOK AND ITS INDONESIAN TRANSLATION
  • Aug 13, 2016
  • Nuning Yudhi Prasetyani + 3 more

This is a translation research focusing on ideological lexicons used by the author and how the translator renders them into Indonesian language by applying some techniques of translation. By using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of Van Dijk’s model, the researcher will analyze both the author’s ideological lexical choice and the translated version. Van Dijk’ CDA model is suitable to apply in this study since this How to Win Friends and Influence People book consists of so many persuasive and motivational ideological lexicons. This is in line with Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive concept where society, cognition and discourse become a triangulation framework. Dijk believed that discourse structures are mediated by social cognition which involves beliefs, opinions or mental models. This study applied descriptive qualitative method by using two sources of data, the English and Indonesian translated version. The data were analyzed based on the translation techniques applied by the translator through CDA’s approach to reveal their accuracy of translation. Key words: translation research, quality of translation, ideological lexicons choice, Van Dijk’s CDA model

Towards the celebration of Eid al-Adha in 2022, there was a lot of discussion in the media, both print and online, about the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in livestock. The purpose of this research is (1) to describe the text structure of the news according to the critical discourse analysis approach by Teun A. Van Dijk, and (2) to describe the characteristics of critical discourse analysis in the news text. This study employed a qualitative descriptive research method using Teun Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis model. The data source for this research was a news article titled "Critical Discourse Analysis using Teun A. Van Dijk's Approach on the News 'FMD Outbreak, Central Java MUI Reveals Conditions for Valid Sacrificial Animals'" published on jatengprov.go.id (Central Java Provincial Government Public Relations and Protocol Office) in June 2022. The data collection technique involved reading and note-taking. The data analysis used in this research was qualitative data analysis using an interactive model. The analysis process consisted of three steps: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) verification or conclusion. These three steps of data analysis were interconnected and had a sequential relationship. The results of the research showed that (1) the text structure of the news aligned with Van Dijk's theoretical structure, which includes macro structure, supra-text structure, and micro-text structure, and (2) based on the characteristics of critical discourse analysis, such as action, context, history, power, and ideology, several opinions in the newspaper text writing could be influenced. Keywords: Discourse analysis, Foot and Mouth Disease, Teun A. Van Dijk.

ABSTRACTRecent years have seen an increase in the influx of asylum-seekers in Scandinavia, and in Denmark this has led to ever-tighter immigration control. This article discusses emerging practices of refugee solidarity and resistance to migration policy in Danish civil society in the wake of what has been referred to as the European refugee crisis. To accomplish this purpose, I analyse how participants in Facebook discussions construe topoi and attitudes when facing the ethical dilemma of respecting the law versus showing concern for humans in need, in line with what Foucault (1983. The subject and Power. In H. Dreyfus & P. Rabinow (Eds.), Michel Foucault: Beyond Structuralism and Hermeneutics (pp. 208–226). Chicago: The University of Chicago Press) has referred to as ‘ethical self-formation’. This is illustrated through a case study of an incident from September 2015, when a member of a Danish City Council offered private shelter to immigrants on their way to Norway. The incident led to legal proceedings in August 2016 for what the defendant referred to as ‘the offense of helping fellow human beings in need’. The study is informed by Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, N. (2003). Analysing Discourse. Textual analysis for social research. London and New York: Routledge; Wodak, R. (2015). The politics of fear. London and New York: Sage) and governmentality theory (Foucault, M. (1983). The subject and Power. In H. Dreyfus & P. Rabinow (Eds.), Michel Foucault: Beyond Structuralism and Hermeneutics (pp. 208–226). Chicago: The University of Chicago Press; Foucault, M. (2007). Security, Territory, Population: Lectures at the Collège de France 1977–78. (G. Burchell, Trans.). New York: Palgrave Macmillan; McIlvenny, P., Klausen, J. Z., & Lindegaard, L. B. (2016). Studies of Discourse and Governmentality. Amsterdam and Philadelphia: Benjamins). Data include media representations and facebook comments published during 2016. The analytical approach combines topos analysis (Wodak, R., & Meyer, M. (Eds.). (2010). Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis. London: Sage; Wodak, R. (2015). The politics of fear. London and New York: Sage) and appraisal analysis to tease out evaluative meaning.

Critical Discourse Analysis (or Critical Discourse Studies – CDA/CDS) examines the relationship between texts, discourses and power, dominance, power abuses and social inequalities. Critical discourse analysis is a multidisciplinary research perspective, which not only examines the interactions between the text, the micro level and its surroundings, the macro level, but its main goal is to uncover social inequalities, expose the forms and modalities of abuse of power. The representatives of CDA are committed to social equality and justice. Present paper presents the work of one of the outstanding representatives of Critical Discourse Analysis, Teun A. Van Dijk, by presenting the history and possibilities of CDA, and also the key elements of Van Dijk’s approach. This study aims to show how knowledge, power and discourse are connected in Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis.

Analysing complex policy change in Hong Kong: what role for critical discourse analysis?
  • May 15, 2009
  • International Journal of Educational Management
  • Annie Y.N Cheng

PurposeThe Hong Kong government recently reformed pre‐primary education with the introduction of a voucher scheme. At the time this policy caused considerable opposition from across Hong Kong Society. This paper seeks to use Fairclough's model of critical discourse analysis to explore a key policy text and seeks to assess to what extent such an analytical framework can help develop a better understanding of the processes of policy development.Design/methodology/approachThe paper uses critical discourse analysis methods and applies these to a specific policy text relating to the reform of pre‐primary education.FindingsThe paper suggests that critical discourse analysis can provide a useful analytical tool for analysing the complexities of the policy development process. In particular it surfaces key tensions within policy, such as those between commitments to equity and efficiency, that may have a significant impact on the outcomes of subsequent policy implementation.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper is based on a small scale study. Its findings are tentative. There is some merit in the approach adopted, but the use of this approach in relation to policy development requires further work to develop it.Originality/valueThe paper adds to the understanding of how a range of methods of data analysis can help develop a more sophisticated understanding of the nuances of policy development.

General elections in Indonesia, especially presidential elections, are always an event where political discourse expressed by candidates greatly influences the social and political dynamics of society. Prabowo Subianto, as one of the presidential candidates who participated in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 elections, has been consistent in conveying the main issues that are relevant to the nation's problems. In this context, an analysis of the discourse constructed by Prabowo Subianto is important to understand how his political message is received and developed in society. The focus of this thesis research is 1) What is the form of Prabowo Subianto's political speech discourse in the presidential candidate debates in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 presidential elections? 2) What is the description of Prabowo Subianto's political speech discourse in the presidential candidate debates in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 presidential elections? 3) How to interpret Prabowo Subianto's political speech discourse using Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model in the presidential candidate debates in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 presidential elections? The objectives of this thesis research are 1) What is the form of Prabowo Subianto's political speech discourse in the presidential candidate debates in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 presidential elections; 2) What is the description of Prabowo Subianto's political speech discourse in the presidential candidate debates in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 presidential elections; 3) How to interpret Prabowo Subianto's political speech discourse using Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model in the presidential candidate debates in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 presidential elections. The results of the study show that the discourse analysis of Prabowo Subianto's political speeches in the presidential candidate debates in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 presidential elections shows significant evolution in themes, contexts, and social cognitions that influence public acceptance of the speech. The text of the speech reflects a response to the changing social and political context, while the social cognition of society influences how the speech is received and interpreted. In Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis, text, context, and social cognition are interrelated and influence each other. The text of Prabowo Subianto's speech reflects a response to the changing social and political context, while the social cognition of society influences how the speech is received and interpreted

This study aims to reveal the meaning of cultural shift in the poem "Diorama" by Sosiawan Leak. The theory used for cultural shift is Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model. This research has a descriptive qualitative design with a theoretical approach to Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model. The source of research data is the poem "Diorama" by Sosiawan Leak. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis consists of an analysis of the structure in the text, cognition, and the social context that surrounds the discourse. The data collection technique uses reading techniques in the form of heuristics related to linguistics or language conventions based on interpreter findings, while hermeneutics is based on readings made to interpret the "Diorama" poem based on the scalpel used. The data analysis technique used is content analysis, with the technique of presenting research results based on the discourse analysis of the Teun A. Van Dijk model. The results show that the poem "Diorama" reflects various forms of resistance and criticism of the colonization of the media crew in an effort to reveal oppression, violence, injustice, alienation, and education that is not intellectual.

THE PHILOSOPHICAL BASIS OF CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS
  • Dec 8, 2023
  • Kanz Philosophia: A Journal for Islamic Philosophy and Mysticism
  • Erni Dewi Riyanti

Critical discourse analysis has become an effective multidisciplinary approach to uncovering hidden ideologies and powers along with the changing times and the increasing prevalence of various discourses in society, both in the form of information written in text and distributed in the digital world. Discourse battles are commonplace in the context of life—as a form of dialectics and freedom to convey ideas. Researchers through this article discuss basic assumptions about the basic or main principles of critical discourse analysis developed by Norman Fairclough and Ruth Wodak. The basic assumptions are that critical discourse analysis focuses on social issues, power relations are discursive, discourse shapes society and culture, discourse manages ideological works, discourse is historical, the relationship between text and society is mediated (discourse), discourse analysis is interpretive and explanatory, and discourse is a form of social action. The article also discusses three models of discourse analysis: the Sociocultural (Norman Fairclough), Socio-cognitive (Teun A. van Dijk), and Historical-Discourse (Ruth Wodak) models. Fairclough’s sociocultural model interprets text not only through the way objects are described but also through the relationships between objects that are defined. Meanwhile, Teun A. van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model emphasizes text, social cognition, and social context, forming a chain of analysis. Lastly, Ruth Wodak’s historical-discourse model puts historical aspects of discourse into his analysis.

Critical discourse analysis for language education: Unveiling power, ideology and manipulation in political discourse
  • Dec 1, 2017

  • Kata Vadai

The present paper focuses on the introduction of a new integrative problem-oriented analytical tool, the Power, Ideology and Manipulation Identification (PIMI) instrument, which was created for the analysis of political discourse, through adapting the most recent theories and methods of Critical Discourse Analysis. The study defines the meaning of power, ideology and manipulation, and attempts to trace their characteristic features in political discourse. These three concepts are of notable importance in the latest Critical Discourse Analysis literature, though the relations between them have not yet been entirely clarified. The present paper discusses the three concepts in parallel, whilst also introducing the new instrument, which has been built on the basis of two existing critical discourse analytical models (Chilton & Schäffner, 1997; van Dijk, 2006). Through presenting the results of the pilot analysis of a relevant piece of political discourse conducted using the new analytical instrument, the study also draws conclusions regarding the interconnected relationship between the three concepts examined. The data gained during the analysis indicate that inequality and polarization are significant elements in the case of each construct, and the results of the analysis also show that despite several overlaps, each concept has its own characteristic profile.

The main subject of this study is a detailed literature review analysis of critical discourse researches made in the Turkish language. As a unique discipline, critical discourse analysis has played an important research tool role in social sciences. Critical discourse analysis, which emerged in the late 1980s, can be considered a relatively new research method in our country. This discipline has developed around the schools of three different academics. One of the leading figures in this field is Teun A. van Dijk (b. 1943). Van Dijk, the founder of the Socio-cognitive Approach, is one of the important names cited in the analysis of political and media discourses. Another name is Norman Fairclough (b.1941). Fairclough's 3-Dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis method also constitutes an important space in discourse studies. Another significant figure in the field of critical discourse analysis is Ruth Wodak (b. 1950). Wodak, the founder of the Discourse Historical approach, first developed this method to analyze the biased anti-Semitic language and imagery in Waldheim's electoral programs in the Austrian presidential election that was held in 1986. Since then, the methodology developed by Wodak has been useful for discourse analysis of cases with an important historical dimension. This study aims to explain the approaches of the discourse experts mentioned above and to compile critical discourse analysis and corpus analysis studies conducted in political and media texts in Turkish academia. As a result of this study, which was carried out within the scope of the qualitative research method, important insights into the basic features, possibilities, and limitations of critical discourse analysis research in Turkish academia have been obtained. Some of the insights obtained can be summarized as follows: It has been determined that the critical discourse analysis studies available in the Council of Higher Education online database include a total number of 54 master’s and doctoral theses published since 2003. Among these theses, the number of the theses prepared in Turkish is 23. As a result of the Google Scholar search, it has been found that the number of Turkish studies conducted since 2003 is more than 90. The most cited research among these studies is the article “Discourse Analysis” published in 2008. The main limitation of most of the critical discourse analysis studies made in the Turkish language is about the usage of the translations of the works authored by the above-mentioned experts who developed this discipline, and this usage limits the number of resources concerning the method because not every major work has been translated into Turkish. In the light of the findings, the ways to improve the discipline in Turkish academia shows the importance of this study.
