Abstract

The metal content in zooplankton samples of Kongsfjorden and Krossfjorden, Svalbard was assessed. The concentration of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb has shown an average of 3.23 μg/g, 11.71 μg/g, 14.86 μg/g, 220.30 μg/g, 3.43 μg/g, and 4.07 μg/g respectively in Krossfjorden. In Kongsfjorden, the level of Cr varied from 1.67 μg/g to 13.29 μg/g and for Ni, it was 2.77 μg/g to 16.07 μg/g. Also, the concentration of Pb and Cd has varied from 15.32 μg/g to 1.43 μg/g and 4.96 μg/g to 0.18 μg/g respectively. Concentration of metals among various groups of zooplankton was different and are in the order copepods < amphipods < mixed except for Cd. Slightly higher concentration of metals was noticed during the early summer period that indicates the source from melting snow and hence transboundary origin.
