Abstract

Two basic protein fractions have been isolated from the soluble proteins of calf-thymus nuclei. The proteins of these two nuclear fractions have a different gross amino acid composition from the histones and the nuclear ribosomal proteins. They are metabolically active in the incorporation of [ 14C]leucine. Chromatography of these basic nuclear proteins on carboxymethyl-cellulose resolves them into separable fractions which, upon electrophoresis at pH 5.0 on polyacrylamide gel, separates seven identifiable components. The possible relationship between some of these chromatographic fractions and nuclear ribosomal proteins is discussed.
