Abstract

Abstract
Articular cartilage calcification caused by deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) is more common in women than in men. The prevalence increases with age; the condition is uncommon under 50 years, but is seen in the knee in up to 60% of individuals aged over 85 years. It may be asymptomatic, may occur in association with osteoarthritis (in which the possible pathogenic role of the crystal is uncertain) or may present as acute pseudogout or associated with chronic arthritis.
