Abstract

This last year has been a wonderful year for ASLO. There have been a lot of changes with better benefits and services for members which keep the society moving forward. Membership in ASLO for 2015 is up (almost 4000 members). That is a very positive statement for any scientific society. We know many from the younger generations are not “joiners,” but ASLO has very strong student (24%) and early career (21%) memberships. The society has many programs geared just for these groups. If you have an idea for a new or improved program, send your thoughts to me or to anyone on the ASLO board. Contact information is found at http://aslo.org/information/board.html. We welcome new ideas. We also have many new members, some from the meeting in Granada. We encourage you to renew your membership this fall and become an active, long-term ASLO member. Please think about becoming a life member or a sustaining member of ASLO as well as making a donation to the society. Donations support student travel to meetings, student and early career professional activities, and education projects. ASLO has new journal editors and a new journal, L&O Letters. We welcome Patricia Soranno as the newest journal's editor-in-chief. Be sure to check out all of the L&O journals and their remarkable features. We have an amazing offering of journals, so please encourage your library to subscribe. This is a very important way to support our published journals, the fields of limnology and oceanography, and all the members of our society. More members are moving away from print journals to online access. This trend is just one of the reasons that ASLO now has a strong and mutually beneficial partnership with Wiley. Just over 3% of members prefer to receive publications in print. And, of course, meetings are a large and ever present part of the society. For those fortunate enough to have gone to the meeting in Granada, Spain, it was great to see you. Wasn't Granada wonderful! 2016 will be a two-meeting year for ASLO. The Ocean Sciences Meeting, held jointly with AGU and TOS, will take place February 21–26 in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the ASLO Summer Meeting is planned for June 5–10 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As always, you are welcome to contact us at the ASLO business office (business@aslo.org), and we hope to see you at the next ASLO meeting. Helen Schneider Lemay, ASLO Business Manager, ASLO Business Office, Waco, TX, USA; business@aslo.org
