Abstract

This study examines the continuous digestion of screened dairy manure at mesophilic temperature (35°C) using an anerobic rotating biological contact reactor. Replicate 5·5 litre reactors installed with arrays of rotating discs as fixed-film support were fed with 3·0 % VS screened filtrate at retention times ranging from 11, 10, 5·, 3, 2 to 1 days. Maximum biogas productivity was obtained with 1·89 litres CH 4 litre −1 day −1 at 1 day HRT. For methane yield, the maximum value occured at 11 days HRT of 0·093 litres CH 4 g −1 VS added. The anaerobic rotating biological contact reactor performed better than the fixed-film reactor on methane production. The fixed-film reactor produced a maximum value of 1·67 litres CH 4 litre −1 day −1 at 1 day HRT. Besides good gas productivity, the anaerobic rotating biological contact reactor can maintain a constant active volume which is not possible in a fixed-film reactor.
