Abstract

This paper is a self-contained analysis of the pseudoscalar meson masses in lattice QCD. By using a strong coupling expansion we obtain random walk representations for the meson propagators. These allow a rigorous analysis of the meson masses, and in particular the mass splitting between the isoscalar singlet and the isoscalar multiplet. This splitting is calculated to leading order, and is related to the susceptibility of a lattice analog of the topological charge density.
