Abstract
Recently there has been a sizable increase in the number of mergers and acquisitions in the United States (US), especially by foreign corporations. For 1975 the total value of mergers and acquisitions exceeded $11.8 billion for 981 acquisitions. This chapter details some of the major publishing mergers and acquisitions for 1984–1988. Between 1984 and 1988, publishing mergers and acquisitions involved dozens of major US firms that spent a reported $23.1 billion on corporate takeovers. International and US corporations participated in this merger and acquisition process for many different, complex reasons. For several years the US dollar has been weak. This economic malaise attracted the attention of a plethora of chief executive officers in Western Europe and elsewhere, because foreign corporations were able to purchase US companies at what they perceived to be “below-market” prices. The acquisition of US publishing firms by foreign corporations has had a number of positive effects.
