Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the average air mercury vapor concentrations in a dental environment. Dental students have little experience in the handling of mercury during amalgam preparation and manipulation; therefore, an increased hazard of mercury vapor contamination in the student laboratories and in the restorative clinics of a dental college would be expected. However, an investigation that was conducted at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry indicated that average air mercury vapor concentrations were lower than the recommended threshold limit value.
