Abstract

The concentrations of dissolved mercury in the Rhône river delta system and the Gulf of Lions measured in this study are significantly lower than previous estimates. However, high mercury contents have been found in the suspended matter collected in the Rhône river delta which could be due to anthropogenic inputs. During estuarine mixing and/or in near-shore sediments a significant re-mobilization of dissolved mercury occurs. In the Gulf of Lions, a maximum of mercury is observed at 400 m.
