Abstract
Our residents are facing work environments that are changing daily, expectations that are evolving, and workforce challenges that are very real. In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Reich and colleagues1 describe challenges that are present relative to mentorship effectiveness in cardiothoracic surgery training. Through a rigorous process of survey data collection, the authors have identified that mentors cited as being “easy to work with and approachable” are the major criterion for mentor selection, whereas the inability to find someone who reflected the resident’s needs was the major reason for not having a mentor.
