Abstract

The goal of this paper is to preliminarily divide the mental verbs appearing in Polszczyzna polnocnokresowa (Northern Borderland Polish) into their main classes. The classification proposed here is supported by semantic criteria. The basis for this is a data base composed of published material from which various verbs describing the mental experiences of human beings were extracted. The material has its roots in the areas of Polslzczyzna polnocnokresowa, where dialect texts were collected form published omnibus volumes and articles as well as unpublished cassette tape recordings. The Polszczyzna polnocnokresowa offers very interesting language material for semantics because it is used outside the actual Polish-speaking area under conditions of language contact. This allows us the opportunity to observe various semantic phenomena that are missing in the standard language.
