Background:The use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has grown, extending its use to people without diabetes. CGM helps prevent hyperglycaemia-related complications in diabetes, however, its value in people without diabetes remains uncertain. Despite online sources framing glucose spikes as harmful, studies show that overall, most healthy individuals maintain normal glucose levels – therefore questioning the significance of these spikes. This project aims to examine whether glucose spikes affect the health of people without diabetes. By comparing the medical and grey literature, we aim to determine whether the grey literature aligns with the peer-reviewed medical literature, or whether it could cause harm through misinformation.Methods:Population: people without diabetes and human endothelial cells; Concept: the effect of glucose spikes on health; Context: global studies and grey literature. Following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a systematic search was undertaken via Medline, Embase and Proquest. Fifty-nine sources were reviewed − 11 medical research papers and 48 grey literature sources. Excel spreadsheets were developed and piloted for the medical and grey literature respectively. Data was extracted and charted, and a narrative synthesis was formulated.Results:Both the medical and grey literature reported glucose spikes can cause endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation in people without diabetes or human endothelial cells. However, the grey literature reported additional effects that is, increased risk of cancer and effects on mental health, energy, mood and sleep.Conclusions:Glucose spikes may impact the health of people without diabetes, but significant health outcomes likely stem from long-term frequent spikes rather than isolated acute spikes. Discrepancies between the medical and grey literature highlight potential for misinformation in the grey literature, although the author does not claim cited sources are misleading, nor does the absence of claims in medical literature mean grey literature is misinforming. Further research is needed to verify if grey literature claims align with peer-reviewed evidence, as hypothetically, misinformation could significantly impact consumer wellbeing.

The Institute of Chinese Medical History and Literature in the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine was officially established on May 28, 1982. Its predecessor was the Medical History Research Office in the Chinese Medicine Institute of the Central Institute of Health, the Editorial Office of the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Theory and Literature Research Office of the Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Before that, the Research Office of Chinese Medical History and Literature in the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 1971. It made remarkable achievements in scientific research, personnel training and discipline construction in terms of medical history and literature. It was upgraded to the Institute with the approval of the Ministry of Health in 1980. After its establishment, the institute has benefited from great achievements.

Towards a characterization of apparent contradictions in the biomedical literature using context analysis.

PurposeTo address the under-reporting of research results, with emphasis on the under-reporting/distorted reporting of adverse events in the biomedical research literature.Design/methodology/approachA four-step approach is used: (1) To identify the characteristics of literature that make it adequate to support policy; (2) to show how each of these characteristics becomes degraded to make inadequate literature; (3) to identify incentives to prevent inadequate literature; and (4) to show policy implications of inadequate literature.FindingsThis review has provided reasons for, and examples of, adverse health effects of myriad substances (1) being under-reported in the premiere biomedical literature, or (2) entering this literature in distorted form. Since there is no way to gauge the extent of this under/distorted-reporting, the quality and credibility of the ‘premiere’ biomedical literature is unknown. Therefore, any types of meta-analyses or scientometric analyses of this literature will have unknown quality and credibility. The most sophisticated scientometric analysis cannot compensate for a highly flawed database.Research limitationsThe main limitation is in identifying examples of under-reporting. There are many incentives for under-reporting and few dis-incentives.Practical implicationsAlmost all research publications, addressing causes of disease, treatments for disease, diagnoses for disease, scientometrics of disease and health issues, and other aspects of healthcare, build upon previous healthcare-related research published. Many researchers will not have laboratories or other capabilities to replicate or validate the published research, and depend almost completely on the integrity of this literature. If the literature is distorted, then future research can be misguided, and health policy recommendations can be ineffective or worse.Originality/valueThis review has examined a much wider range of technical and non-technical causes for under-reporting of adverse events in the biomedical literature than previous studies.

The most influential blogs, as measured by in- links, are written by diabetes patients and tend not to cite biomedical literature. The aims of this study were to: (1) characterize the menopause transition (MT) on social media and (2) determine if concordance or discordance exists when comparing MT-focused social media posts and biomedical research literature. We analyzed 440 sequential Instagram posts with the hashtag #menopause over 2 weeks from January to February 2019. Posts were composed of 299 unique accounts, resulting in an average of 1.7 posts per account (standard deviation [SD] 1; range 1-9; median 1 and interquartile range [IQR] 1-2). Each account had an average of 2,616 followers (SD 11,271; range 3-129,000; median 421.5 and IQR 177-1,101). Content and thematic analyses were completed for posts, images, and videos to identify codes related to the MT. The top 15 codes were then searched along with the key term "menopause" in PubMed to ascertain the level of concordance between Instagram content and peer-reviewed literature on the MT. We identified 69 codes in our corpus of Instagram content, resulting in 9 categories: physical health, mental health, complementary and integrative health, advertising, social, advice, self-care, nature, and self-expression (kappa 0.95-1.00). The most prevalent codes were related to weight loss/fitness (20.5%) and hormones (18.4%). The majority of frequent codes identified in Instagram posts were infrequently listed in biomedical literature related to menopause. However, there were two codes, Weight loss/Fitness and Hot flashes, that were frequently discussed in Instagram posts and the biomedical literature. The examination of #menopause on Instagram provides novel insights for researchers and clinicians. Our findings provide a better understanding of the experiences and support needs of individuals experiencing menopause. Furthermore, codes related to menopause have low prominence in the biomedical literature, suggesting key topics that could be explored in the future.

Biomedical and life sciences literature is unique because of its exponentially increasing volume and interdisciplinary nature. Biomedical literature access is essential for several types of users including biomedical researchers, clinicians, database curators, and bibliometricians. In the past few decades, several online search tools and literature archives, generic as well as biomedicine specific, have been developed. We present this chapter in the light of three consecutive steps of literature access: searching for citations, retrieving full text, and viewing the article. The first section presents the current state of practice of biomedical literature access, including an analysis of the search tools most frequently used by the users, including PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase, and a study on biomedical literature archives such as PubMed Central. The next section describes current research and the state-of-the-art systems motivated by the challenges a user faces during query formulation and interpretation of search results. The research solutions are classified into five key areas related to text and data mining, text similarity search, semantic search, query support, relevance ranking, and clustering results. Finally, the last section describes some predicted future trends for improving biomedical literature access, such as searching and reading articles on portable devices, and adoption of the open access policy.

Citations are an important, but often overlooked, part of every scientific paper. They allow the reader to trace the flow of evidence, serving as a gateway to relevant literature. Most scientists are aware of citations' errors, but few appreciate the prevalence of these problems. The purpose of the present study was to examine how often frequently cited papers in biomedical scientific literature are cited inaccurately. The study included an active participation of the first authors of included papers; to first-hand verify the citations accuracy. Findings from feasibility study, where we reviewed 1540 articles containing 2526 citations of 14 most cited articles in which the authors were affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine University of Belgrade, were further evaluated for external confirmation in an independent verification set of articles. Verification set included 4912 citations identified in 2995 articles that cited 13 most cited articles published by authors affiliated with the Mayo Clinic Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. A citation was defined as being accurate if the cited article supported or was in accordance with the statement by citing authors. At least one inaccurate citation was found in 11 and 15% of articles in the feasibility study and verification set, respectively, suggesting that inaccurate citations are common in biomedical literature. The most common problem was the citation of nonexistent findings (38.4%), followed by an incorrect interpretation of findings (15.4%). One-fifth of inaccurate citations were due to chains of inaccurate citations. Based on these findings, several actions to reduce citation inaccuracies have been proposed.

Professor Zheng Jinsheng was the former director of the China Institute for the History of Medicine and Medical Literature, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. He is a renowned contemporary scholar of medical history and literature, and has made outstanding contributions to the field of herbal medicine research. This interview focuses on the perspectives of personal background, academic origins, academic mentors, important projects and achievements as well as academic exchanges and collaboration. By content and framework analysis, four themes were found as follows: clear direction and pursuing excellence in the field, mastering methods and learning in depth, keeping pace with the times and being creative, and sincere cooperation and team work. This work is expected to provide reference for academic research in medical history and literature.
