Abstract
This chapter highlights medical applications of laser spectroscopy. The laser spectroscopy in the wavelength and the time domain adds several new aspects to the use of lasers in medicine. Besides basic studies on the molecular and cell levels, an important impact on the clinical management of cancer and circulating system diseases should be foreseen. The field presents a major challenge on laser spectroscopists in collaboration with physicians. Medical analytical laser spectroscopy provides sensitive analysis of body fluids and tissue samples. Photodynamic tumor therapy using tumor seeking agents in combination with laser light is a potent method of laser-induced chemistry in the body. Laser-induced fluorescence provides new possibilities for diagnosis of malignant tumors and atherosclerotic plaques. Spectral studies of the propagation of picosecond optical pulses in tissue are utilized for the assessment of tissue oxygenation and tissue drug concentrations. Enhanced contrast in transillumination is demonstrated by using temporal discrimination. Thus, multi-color fluorescence imaging is considered a powerful technique for the visualization of malignancies.
