Abstract

This study was focused on the sulfite-sulfate oxidation mechanisms in the nitrite-sulfite mixed solutions. Results showed that the oxidation rate of sulfite was first order with respect to the sulfite or oxygen concentration in the sulfite solution, while the oxidation rate of sulfite was accelerated in the nitrite-sulfite mixed solutions. The sulfite was oxidized into sulfate via an intermediate mechanism in the sulfite solution, but it was a radical mechanism in the nitrite-sulfite mixed solutions.
