Abstract

Greenbugs, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), mixed in corncob grits were effectively transferred to wheat, sorghum, and pearl millet plants in both field and greenhouse by a mechanical insect dispenser (inoculator or bazooka). Numbers of greenbugs released were determined by the ratio of greenbugs: grit. Over 90% of greenbugs survived in grits for 2, 6, 12, and 24 h at 35, 25, 15, and 5°C, respectively. Infestations produced by greenbug releases from the inoculator were more uniform than those obtained by mass infestation methods. Preliminary observations suggest that the technique also may be useful to infest plant with other aphid species and some Hemiptera.
