Abstract

Mechanical behavior of ceramics and glass under local loading of specimens by an indentor is studied experimentally by a proposed test procedure. The effect of scratching on fracture resistance is assessed by comparing the test results obtained by two methods – edge fracture under scratching (S+EF method) and without scratching (EF method). Based on the analysis of experimental findings, the fracture mechanism of these brittle materials under such test conditions is discussed.
