In an electrical distribution system, switchgear is necessary to control the flow of power either at the command of the operating personnel, or automatically under the discrimination of the protective system to disconnect an unhealthy section on the occurrence of a fault. Its function is thus purely electrical but its design, manufacture and reliability in service depends to a large extent on the correct application of mechanical engineering principles and practice
