Abstract

Laser ultrasonics has been accepted as a unique tool for material testing. The technique can probe samples in a noncontact manner, which offers considerable advantages in high temperature experiments such as sound velocity measurements for advanced materials. A serious drawback of the technique is the poor sensitivity of the detection, especially for the samples with optically rough surfaces. Recently, phase conjugate methods have been proposed to overcome the problem1, 2. In the method, a distorted optical beam from the rough surface is changed to a well collimated beam, thereby a conventional interferometer can be used retaining the sensitivity.
