Abstract
The measurement of the leptonic branching ratios of the tau using the 1991 and 1992 OPAL data samples is described. From a sample of 27196 e + e − → τ + τ − events with an estimated background of (1.83 ± 0.30)%, 7322 τ → eυυ ¯ and 7941 τ → μυυ ¯ candidates are identified. Using efficiency and background estimates determined from the study of Monte Carlo events and control samples of data, the following branching ratios have been obtained: B ( τ → eυυ ¯) = (18.15 ± 0.20 ± 0.28)% and B ( τ → μυυ ¯) = (17.48 ± 0.18 ± 0.23)%. These results, which are consistent with measurements from other experiments, have been used with other properties of the muon and tau lepton to check the universality of charged current couplings.
