Abstract

A new technique which determines the complete electric field of ultrashort optical pulses has been experimentally demonstrated. This general technique improves over previous cross-correlation1 and (interferometric) autocorrelation2 techniques in that it determines uniquely and completely the field's phase as well as its amplitude. The technique imposes no requirements on the pulse to be measured and only needs a synchronous probe pulse short enough to resolve all structure of interest.
