Abstract

An experimental procedure is proposed to study the molecular weight distribution of a complex system using electron impact mass spectrometry. This procedure is justified using a mathematical argument. This argument is based on first principles. Following this experimental procedure and a proposed data analysis method, one can unambiguously determine the molecular weight distribution of a complicated system with the effects of incomplete sample introduction and fragmentation properly taken into account.
