Abstract

Described is a method for measuring diffusion and solubility data of gases in small (∼ 5 mm) solid samples of any geometrical shape, contrary to the limitations in usual diffusion and permeation experiments (foils or tubes). The method is also applicable for the determination of permeation-reduction factors of surface layers on these samples. It is based on measurements of the gas contents of the samples before and after stepwise charging or discharging with the diffusing gas. The practical use of the method is illustrated with measurements on hydrogen in metal samples.
